Missouri Democrats Join To Increase Labor Forces

The Democrats in Missouri seem to be banking hard on the future of their political party by linking the state’s fight regarding the law known as “right to work.” This law is formally known as Proposition A and is being put into place to help get some of Missouri’s last Democrats in office a place to stay. They hold positions throughout the state and will be the last of the Democrats if this law does not get passed.

There will be a referendum about the law placed on the ballot held in August. There are two Missouri Democrats trying to get re-ected this year. They are Nicole Galloway and Clair McCaskill. McCaskill is a United States Senator and Galloway is a state auditor. Voters in August are tasked with trying to get them re-elected or kicking them to the curb.

Richard Trumka, the AFL-CIO national president, has a belief that Democratic activists and the union across Missouri and the whole country are going to stay energetic up until and through the important elections. He was visiting St. Louis over the weekend to helped campaign against the new Proposition A hoping to help pass the law of “right to work.” This law was originally passed last year during the General Assembly.

Right To Work Legislation

Under this law, employers and their unions are not allowed to require their workers to pay fees or dues. The backers of this law feel that it would help to make the state much more attractive for new businesses. The members of the state’s unions feel much differently about the law. They feel that this law will just end up with steep cuts to their benefits and wages. Last year, unions came together to collect enough votes in order to get a referendum on this new law in August on the ballot.

Mr. Trumka thinks that this change in the law is important because it is letting people around the world see that workers are not going to let another law pass to effectively cut their wages without a fight. It will be devastating to many union workers and can both increase poverty levels and the gap in women’s pay again.

The Party And The Podcast

Following the rally, Trumka was one of the top headliners at the annual Truman Dinner for the Missouri Democratic Party. This event is held each year in St. Louis and is typically the largest yearly event. Almost 500 event visitors filled the event location for the dinner to be held. Among all of the speakers were Galloway and McCaskill as well. However, the biggest event from that evening may have been where Trumka taped a live podcast hosted by the former secretary of Missouri, Jason Kander.

Kander became a nationally known figure because he founded a voting rights group that he called the Let America Vote group. He also hosts regular podcasts online that he has named Majority 54. Back in 2016, Kander had lost his run for the United States’ Senate. However, he hasn’t stopped and plans to announce soon that he will bid for the position of mayor in Kansas City.

McCaskill Speaks Of Healthcare And A Cracked Rib

Well before the podcast took place, Galloway and McCaskill took turns with speeches that both prompted many cheers. During her speech, McCaskill took the time to attack her GOP rival, Josh Hawley. She spoke of his failure to work hard at work like he is supposed to and then mocked him about press reports that stated he wears gym shorts and buys a lot of wine. However, what really got the crowd excited was when she started talking about her favorite topic of healthcare. She spoke of the support of a lawsuit by Hawley that would effectively eliminate some of the many protections in insurance that help those with pre-existing conditions get the help they need.

When she took a moment to ask people out in the audience to stand if they have or know someone who has pre-existing conditions, most of them did stand up. She ended up leaving the dinner earlier than anyone else because she was in pain from a recent accident that left her with a cracked rib. She was in Washington the week before and was at a lunch with a Senator. She began to choke on her food and he performed the Heimlich on her and got the food dislodged. However, she suffered a crack in her rib in the process. She told other attendees that she is feeling okay and under the care of her doctor in the meantime.
